CHAPTER ELEVEN: War (part a - "Awe Struck")

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shinto gritted his teeth and pushed. The bars dropped into place, locking everyone inside. He wiped sweat from his brow and suddenly thought about how hot it was that night, despite the breeze. He nodded to his first lieutenant, and watched as he entered code into the keypad.
They all watched the transparent shield lock above, creating a dome and securing the locks. They’d seen it several times, but this time it meant business.
As he turned, he breathed out. The planet was more silent than he’d ever remembered. Shinto shook his head and walked out into his place in the circle (formation) around the arena. They’d stand there and help in any outbreaks of battle that made it past the ki shield.
In the soft breeze he let his mind wander.
~ The small boy peered out the window, a scowl painted deeply over his face. "Kaasan, it’s not even bad out. WHY do we have to stay inside!?" he whined, glaring at his sister as she snorted from her seat.
"It’s the calm before the storm Shinto, just wait." She said bluntly as she locked the shield over the house into place. They were lucky to have such equipment to protect from storms.
Shinto growled and smashed his face against the transparent material that formed a round window.
Sure enough, not even a minute later, the sky erupted in sudden sound, wind, and light. This sent Shinto reeling back in surprise at his first storm. He gazed amazedly out the window from afar, wondering how it could be so calm one moment and the next... ~
Shinto jumped at the huge crash from inside the dome. He could see no light. But the ground shook at his feet. His black gaze nervously met those of his squad as they gripped their respective machines tighter.
Freeza was set aback at what he had witnessed. The monkey-tailed king had announced his bidding for war, and commanded the entire bulk of contenders... or what were now warriors to "power up".
He’d watched the dramatic scene of the men transforming. Groups of what seemed like batallions powered up at once, beginning with the King’s personal guard, and flowing backward into the small sea of Saiyans.
Each one erupted into a flame of golden aura which turned the deep tone of their hair gold and made it stand on end. Even the most hairy of the warriors took on a more wicked look as beady black eyes turned to beady green ones. They all lifted their chins.
Almost as quickly as it had started, Freeza was staring at an army of burning beings.
The army itself looked ready to attack.
"What a performance...." he whispered to himself, suddenly wishing he’d thought to bring a recording device.
The King’s mouth pulled a feral smirk as he looked directly at him.
"What animals..." Freeza said to himself, fighting not to smirk right back.
And then the ground began to shake...
Radditz turned and bared his teeth at Sukiya. He didn’t dare growl, for fear of being heard. His head shifted to look back as he felt his face burn slightly. ‘Don’t push me baka...if they see us, we’re as good as dead" he said with just enough voice so her accute hearing could pick it up.
He visually bristled when he felt her breath on his ear. ‘Well then move up moron, I can’t even see."
Radditz moved over slightly and they both watched from the treeline. The top of the dome lit ans darkened as if there was a storm contained inside.
"Well, " Sukiya spoke in her uniquely low voice. ‘If what you say is true, we’re dead anyway. We might as well fly the planet un-clothed." She smirked, not even bothering to look at him. She could guess the look on his face.
"You are incredibly insolent, bitch!" he hissed. "Our race is about to fall mercilessly and you want to play like a child!?"
Sukiya dropped onto her stomach and grinned. "The way I’d like to play is hardly childlike." Her tail waved in the air above her as she spoke.
Radditz swallowed his intrigue at that statement and could only scoff as both of their gazes remained focused on the dome.
Kakarott felt like a kid again. The power that coursed through his body was envigorating, but he’d also never felt so... Saiyan! The anger that overtook his mind, and the need to just kill and be rid of anything that crossed his path were taking over him completely. These beings were threatening his home. They meant to make slaves out of him, his mate, and what would be their child...
He spread his feet and stood his ground, even as the ground itself began to shake. His green eyes focused on the King, who faced Freeza with golden hair himself. Freeza’s men stood like scared animals, and the lizard king himself balled his fists in rage. He’d expected his tournament, not a challenge to his empire. Freeza seemed stunted for works, but slowly rose in his little chair, powering up ever so slowly in a last attempt to look regal. He shouted to his men to fight, and they all seemed to jump back.
"Bring it on...." he said in a low, harsh snarl. Kakarott grinned like a wicked demon ready to take his prey to hell.
Bulma’s head jerked up as she felt a small quake in the room. She immediately tensed up, glancing up to Trunks who was amused by his blanket. She gritted her teeth, remembering Vegeta’s words; "Keep him calm..."
She smiled and coo-ed at him as he bounced happily in place, e by the shaking earth. She swallowed a lump in her throat. ‘That’s your daddy Trunks! Yeah!" she said in her native tongue with a high pitched voice to make him grin.
Bulma pulled his crib back with her as she moved back into a corner. She stooped, keeping her back to the two adjacent walls and closed her eyes.
Bulma began to think that maybe she should have gone back to Earth.
Chatsu felt charged as he threw his punches. The golden aura that surrounded him made him feel ten times his own size.
It was amazing how slow these fighters were! The short bald one in front of him had tried to pull a trick. Chatsu had gone straight for the thing when he had seen it trying to catch Kijah off guard as she fought another. The thing had seen him, turned and placed his hands to his head. Chatsu blinked, and was bashed from behind. It was almost as if time had been stopped.
He had remembered the Queen’s words. "Don’t let them play their games. Don’t give them a chance to power up." He’d turned and blasted both arms off the green thing, leaving it unable to continue it’s tricks, and barely able to fight.
Chatsu did however, admore his futile attempts as he proceeded to rid the arena of another of Freeza’s followers.
Vegeta stared at his own fist, his face a stern smirk as he admired his own power. A golden flame surrounded the clenched fingers, flowing freely as the energy bowled itself over.
The green eyes shot up dramatically, emphasized by the wicked, knowing smirk.
Freeza had laughed at first, raising above Vegeta in his attempt to keep his stature. He’d told his warriors to fight, and was forced to turn and glare at them to get them to attack Vegeta’s mostly golden army.
He turned to smirk. "You know, these contenders may be a match for my men, but all of you combined will never be a match for me in my perfect form."
One yellow eyebrow shot up, but the voice of his mate quickly subdued his instincts. ~"You absolutely can not let them power up. This is not a game. They are coming to take over this planet! Your guard Radditz even made it clear that they have an empire larger than this."
"Woman, in this state no one is stronger than I. He knew it when he left, and he’ll know it on the battlefield." He said, wishing she understood his need for a challenge.
Bulma sighed and looked down. ‘Your son will be a challenge when he is grown. But do you really want to risk him... risk me? For a silly thrill?"
He sneered.
"Vegeta, you’ve seen these things over the years. Saiyans are very easily bluffed. Especially the arrogant ones. ." she looked pointedly at him.
He scoffed, knowing he had a reason to be arrogant. ~
"Well, forgive my rudeness, but I’ve wasted enough time waiting for you to finish speaking." Vegeta said as he fixed a glove.
He looked up and smirked. ‘Perfect.’ He shot towards Freeza and proceeded to wipe the surprised look off of his face.
Laughing out loud, Liena could barely control herself. Kijah looked over, and she paused her ki shots for a moment to return the look. "This is just a game! It’s almost fun!" she glanced to her gold engulfed fist before releasing the blast through an outward faced palm.
She focused green eyes on the eyes of her friend, who finished her ‘toy’ off and shrugged, looking around the brawling arena. She noted Saiyans amongst the dead on the ground. "Not totally." Kijah said firing a nonchalant blast into an oncoming purple thing. "Some of them decided to ignore the Queen’s warning." She finished. Liena nodded. "Yeah, I saw one of them switch bodies!" Kijah sneered at Liena in confusion. She shook her head "Just don’t ask."
Kijah snorted and looked angrily at one who was overpowering her brother. "Let’s go, we have to keep our ki up." She said shooting off towards the scene.
Liena followed suit, taking time to fire blasts at idle enemies.
She laughed to herself as her fellow warriors made angry faces at her for killing their play things.
Kijah ignored her brother’s protests as she and Liena shot in and began the barrage of attacks on his contendor.
He’d allowed him to power up; to upgrade just as the Queen had told them not to. The beast was one of Freeza’s original guards. The feminine one with green hair. He didn’t look very feminine at this point.
He was three times as strong. Kijah tasted her own blood and pushed herself harder, quickening her kicks while Liena powered one of her more powerful ki blasts up behind her. She pulled back a step as she began to get overwhelmed by his attacks.
"Kij!"
She shot to her left immediately, out of the way of her friend’s (now full powered) blast. She watched, fighting flashbacks of their childhood, when they were notorious for fighting so well as a team. They’d been in trouble almost constantly as children for starting neighborhood brawls.
Liena’s tight blue beam slammed the monster back and he landed on the ground below.
Kijah landed, followed by Liena, and the two exchanged a brief nod before watching to see if he got up.
Shinto stepped beside the two and snarled. "He’ll get up. I’ve done that twice before.." he wiped his brow, smearing more blood across his face.
Kijah smirked and crouched. "Well then Shin, let’s not let him do it a third time." She said, and immediately shot into the slow clearing dust.
Liena exchanged a short glance with Kijah’s brother, and shrugged. With that, the two followed suit, jumping into the swirling dust after Kijah.
